My working practice begins with questions rather than fixed answers. Whether working with photography, moving image or audio, I choose the medium that best serves that project and let the story itself determine how it should be told and in a way that makes sense to the audience. I’m interested in documentary and narrative practice as a way of exploring people, places and the environments they use.
Alongside personal projects I undertake editorial and commissioned work, including a number of years working as a unit stills photographer within the film and TV industry. My other freelance work has been wide and varied but documentary and photojournalism have been always been core. These experiences continue to inform my practice today, especially the way I think about narrative, atmosphere and visual sequencing.
Parallel to my freelance practice I have always taught at university. I currently teach Multimedia Journalism BA and MA at Manchester Metropolitan (ManMet). Working with students continually challenges my own practice and approaches, it has enriched what I do and how I do it, this has created an ongoing dialogue between the processes of making, research and teaching.
